The new Modest Mouse single "Float On" is getting airplay on the local Clear Channel rock station here in Tucson, KFMA.
Although I don't particularly like the song, nor do I consider Modest Mouse a pop-friendly band, I'm glad to see that maybe they will finally make money off of one of their albums (I'm sure Epic had nothing to do with this). It's sad though that yet another band has gone this way, after producing some genuinely good albums which weren't readily accepted by the public. Does this begin the downfall of the band, following in the steps of Weezer and Jimmy Eat World? Or is it just that Clear Channel has decided to take an uncharacteristically-bold chance on a band with a large, yet decidedly-underground following?
Keep your ears open to the fascist airwaves ("The Buzz", "The Edge" or any local "New Rock Alternative"), and you may catch it. If you do, call in. You may not like it, but it's better than the "alternative."

Re: commercial airplay for new single
Sat, April 10, 2004 - 1:45 AMI haven't been this excited about a band since The Smiths. When "The Queen Is Dead" was released, a friend told me that if The Smiths were to start getting airplay on commercial radio, I would start to dislike them... because they would no longer be "alternative". I told him he was wrong.
'Course, we never got the chance to find out.
I'm sure my friend would say the same thing about me and Modest Mouse. I'd tell him he was wrong again.
I just heard "Float On". It does, indeed, sound quite commercial... it's not "I Came As A Rat" or "Cowboy Dan", but it still gives me that same excitement I felt whenever I heard a new Smiths track.... that same exciting sense of satisfaction I felt the first time I heard Modest Mouse in the woods one summer night on a Nevada mountain top.
Listen to the guitar work in "Float On"... it's like some of the best stuff U2 did in the 80's... reminds me of Simple Minds' "Sparkle In The Rain".
Pop CAN be good. If this is pop, it's good pop. -

Re: commercial airplay for new single
Mon, April 12, 2004 - 9:34 AMi think its great when a band gets the opportunity to take their music to the masses. even the bands that are my favorite. even the bands i liked before they went big. even modest mouse. by default i have often taken the position that a band is selling out when they are known by others than myself.
ive changed. if someone came to you and said they we love your work and that they want to do something for you. whether it be airtime on the radio or mtv or whatever. i cant think of any reason not to do it. i would be tired of doing the same stuff over and over again. the same show the same people. the point of making stuff is so people will see it or hear it. what's the point of making music if nobody gets the chance to hear it. i would take advantage of every possible opportunity.
i hope modest mouse goes huge and become the richest rock stars out there. i hope that everyone on this planet gets the opportunity to hear their music because i like that much. -

Re: commercial airplay for new single
Fri, April 16, 2004 - 10:34 AMIt's a common thought that a band is getting airplay so they must have sold out. Modest Mouse Has ben with sony for how long? It was bound to happen.
I think that we think like this because it's like our own personal best kept secret. You share it with thoughs you trusts and then tell everyone else to fuck off, because it's not worth your time trying to explian good music to them.

Re: commercial airplay for new single
Tue, June 15, 2004 - 1:15 PMI'm just surprised it took this long to happen. I think a lot of past Modest Mouse songs could have been successful commercially; their appeal is just undeniable. Trailer Trash, Gravity Rides Everything, Dark Center of the Universe, Here It Comes, Heart Cooks Brain... Radio was just too stupid to explore anything that didn't sound like Three Doors Creed. -

Re: commercial airplay for new single
Wed, June 16, 2004 - 10:47 AMIt did happen a lot earlier at a more local level. Pretty much with the release of Lonesome Crowded West they were played on the mainstream alternative stations in Seattle and other NW cities, and after that they went from playing lots of tiny all ages clubs to doing the bigger 21 and up shows, from opening for bands like built to spill and archers of loaf to headlining and touring. So, their success was pretty inevitable. I caught on to em in '96 and have also been surprised its taken this long for them to get big. When I first heard em and picked up Its a Long Drive..., I was just like, wow, this is totally unique, it rocks, they're awesome live, they're going to take over the world! -

Re: commercial airplay for new single
Fri, August 27, 2004 - 2:53 PMAs a long time listener of modest mouse....I would have to say that I am happy that they are making money, but I am not too excited for the airplay. In Oregon they are huge. Everyone calls them emo when they have been around for years and we all know its indie rock. I love their new album, but I hate to see cheerleaders singing to my favorite band for the past 7 years. I have heard float on after Brittany Spear's on the radio here and to me....that is just sick and worng. Issac Brock lives up the street from me in Portland and I wish that I could just run into him and tell him that I love his album, but modest Mouse is too great to be heard after whoops I did it again. -

Re: commercial airplay for new single
Mon, September 13, 2004 - 11:01 PMthe last sentance of your post made me grin... thanks. i've been a listener of the mouse for a few years (not as long as 7), and i do agree with you. they are too great to be heard in between the tackiness of britney spears and whatever else is being played on clear channel's stations... i honestly don't know anymore, i don't listen to portland radio much, i listen to the radio of my own creation...it's called my ipod on shuffle...
oh and maybe you'll run into isaac around se. wouldn't that be a hoot? i dunno what i'd say to him if i ever bumped into him. probably nothing. except either "sorry" or "what band are you in? modest moose?" hee hee.

Re: commercial airplay for new single
Sun, October 17, 2004 - 2:39 AMThats funny. I am glad they have made it big...but sometimes it just kind of sucks when you discover something so great and then it gets played out.
But I know you and I know the good albums (not that they all aren't good), But you know what I am saying. The old school modest mouse.
