Modest Mouse is my favorite band. Ever. I feel like there is something fundamentally different about the way they "do things" in their music that you just don't find in any other band. I feel like their words reverberate 100% with my own perception of reality, emotions, people, etc. And the music they set these sentiments to is orgasmic.

Re: modest mouse
Thu, April 7, 2005 - 6:44 PMI was going through pretty rough times in practically every aspect (financial, relationship, job, family...) when a very perceptive and empathic coworker of mine, a guy of almost 40, handed me two Modest Mouse CDs, The Moon and Antarctica and Building Nothing out of Something. Other than "Float On" which was becoming popular at this time, I had never heard of them. The two CDs were on constant rotation for weeks, and simply changed my outlook on life for the better. Most of their music is pretty depressing, however. But I feel the same as Cecilia, they echo almost perfectly my subconcious feelings about life and death and everything between. To this day, almost a year later, I cannot describe quite why I love them so much. From their first CD to their latest, I am a fan for life. -

Re: modest mouse
Tue, May 31, 2005 - 7:03 PMI'm a modest mouse newbie .. i have one cd of theirs - 'everywhere & his nasty parlour tricks' and i have to say i just >can't get enough< !! it is the cd i listen to most often & have not yet gotten tired of any of the songs. i haven't heard any of their other cd's or music .. i saw a bunch at a used music store but there were so many i sorta got intimidated & wasn't sure if they'd all be as good as 'everywhere .. ' have you heard this cd? loving it as much as i do, which would you recommend for my next modest mouse cd purchas(es)???
i love their lyrics, voices, interesting use of instruments, & out of the ordinary sound ..
thanks in advance for any recommendations !! -

Re: modest mouse
Tue, May 31, 2005 - 7:51 PMIf you really like "Everywhere..." I'd suggest either "Good News..." or "Moon and Antarctica" which were the succeeding and preceding LPs respectively.
"This is a Long Drive..." is also great, but a little more energetic and wild than "Everywhere..."
Hope that helps.

Wed, June 1, 2005 - 12:58 PMI would definitely recommend Moon & Antarctica. Better than Everywhere & Good News, in my humble opinion. -

Re: modest mouse
Thu, June 2, 2005 - 9:07 PMNothing too similar to Modest Mouse out there, and that's the way I'd like to see it remain.
You may want to check out the Saddle Creek label, specifically Bright Eyes and Cursive if you haven't already.
I'm really into "Post Rock" though: mogwai, godspeed, explosions in the sky...but that's just me maybe.

Re: modest mouse
Mon, June 6, 2005 - 11:50 PMI can't beleive nobody mentioned "the lonely crowded west" one of my favorites!... a lot of pixies/pavement influence on that one. I can't beleive it but I actually REALLY like "good news..." too. I kept waiting for them to suck after going to a major label, but they have suprised me at every turn. the crowds at their shows are a lot different now though... that's a whole nuther thread tho... -

Re: modest mouse
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 5:15 PMYeah, it's inevitable when a good band signs onto a popular label... the music may not change, but the fan base will become pretty diluted. We're all still here though. I also really like Good News, I think one of the most notable songs on that CD, in relation to their growing popularity, was "Bury Me With It" ...
Same thing happened with another of my favorite bands, Against Me!... they were great and obscure and I thought I had a little secret for a while, until they signed onto AF Records and started changing their recording style in little ways. At first I was shocked and a bit miffed, but I realized shortly afterwards that they were still awesome.
Lonesome Crowded West is a great album. Styrofoam Boots and Heart Cooks Brain really make my day. -

Re: modest mouse
Wed, June 8, 2005 - 9:04 PMya, the last mouse show I went to was full of all these teenagers trying to film it on their cellphones... the modern equivalent of a lighter salute I guess...
mouse used to be one of those bands that if you met someone who also liked and knew about them they were automatically cool people because they "knew." Now...not so much... but hey the music is still great! and that's basically all that should matter.

Re: modest mouse
Sat, June 11, 2005 - 5:39 PMI am an 8 year listener now of Modest Mouse and I must say that even though it sucked the first time I heard them on the radio.....I am happy for their sucess. They have been at it since 94 and they well deserve all that they are getting. I never listen to the radio....so imagine my suprise when i turn it on and hear one of my favorite bands on the an alternative station that is popular with kids my lil sisters age. Well....thats what happens when a band is suoer good though.
Please if you are new to them check out:
This is a long drive (blah blah blah ) its a long title.
Lonsome Crowded West
These are just two of the many albums that made them who they are. I have all but one I think of their albums and they are all amazing, but these 2 have a special place in my heart.
Once you hear dramamine for the first time....you will cream your pants :0) -

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: modest mouse
Sat, June 11, 2005 - 11:18 PMbased on the varying "fave" responses, i think i will have to increase my cd budget :) sign of a good band, tho ..
anyone down for swapping burnt copies of mm cd's?
i'm all about free music .. -

Re: modest mouse
Sun, June 12, 2005 - 12:46 AMI can't swap with ya, but I would check out Soulseek. Its a file sharing program...mostly used for music. If you message me I will give you my user name and then you can download some of my files and I have a ton of Modest Mouse in there :)
